Calmore Group Slimming World

Newsflash!
Tonight at Calmore Group Slimming World Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20 was voted as their chosen charity for the forthcoming Slimathon. We received the most votes across the three groups which meet at Calmore Community Centre on Thursdays. Those of us who volunteer to take part in a Slimathon over the next six weeks will donate our sponsorship to Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20. I will be putting my name down – and so will Dave (although he doesn’t know it yet)!! My aim is to lose 9.5 lbs over the next six weeks.

Thank you Emilie and everyone at Calmore Slimming World for supporting our cause.

Saturday 15th February 2014 – The Main Event!

Afternoon Tea at Lyndhurst Park Hotel – Saturday 15th February 2014

Well, it finally arrived – the day of our main event. The last few weeks had been nailbiting, wondering if we would sell enough tickets to make the event a success, would people enjoy themselves, would the entertainment all run smoothly, how would the art auction go, etc. etc. Sleep was something we snatched through the night – waking up at three in the morning and having to do something towards the big day that “Just couldn’t wait”. Emails followed by text messages saying “I’ve sent you and email re …. ” were flying between me “Mum” or “Mother” depending on circumstances and “Amy” or DAUGHTER” depending on my mood. Often texts would start “Are you awake…?”.

But we need not have worried. We were allowed into the function room early in the morning, so that’s just where we were, setting up display boards, arranging the prizes for the prize draw, displaying the art for the art auction, Amy added some final touches as well, like adding confetti and sweets (nice touch I thought) to the tables. Then later in the morning we collected the balloons to add to the Tables.

And then .. just before 1.30 p.m. people started to arrive, the room was transformed as people took their seats and the entertainment began.

Andy Maxwell was the DJ, compare for the afternoon and later the auctioneer for the Art Auction. He started by introducng Amy, who welcomed everyone and told them a bit about Amy’s HOPE 20 and what we hoped to achieve. Amy then handed over to the Four Seasons Choir, who at Amy’s request sang songs from the 40s. Just as they finished Jamie performed some table magic for many of the guests – I don’t think he managed to get to all of the tables.

The afternoon tea was then available from the adjoining bar. This was a lovely spread of sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps, scones jam and cream and delicious victoria sandwich. There were flasks of tea and coffee. Everyone helped themselves to the food and drink and posted their entrance ticket into a “Post Box” to be drawn out towards the end of the afternoon.

At 3.00 p.m. Justin took to the stage and sang a number of songs, including “Here I am with you”, “Cathy’s Song”, “She’s Always a Woman”, “I’m Yours” and finished with “You Raise Me Up”. He did an amazing job and numerous people commented afterwards about how beautifully he sang.

The Joker and the King followed. They sat on the edge of the stage, sang a number of their own songs whilst playing acoustic guitars. They gave a relaxed and chilled performance. Thank you to you both for playing for us – and to Jamie for the table magic earlier in the afternoon. The Joker and the King (Mike and Jamie) have a CD available, which we can recommend, so if anyone would like to buy a copy, please contact us and we’ll pass your details on to them.

The Art Auction came next. We had 21 items donated by family, friends and colleagues. The auction was good fun, with Andy, wearing his auctioneer hat encouraging people to bid and sometimes bidding himself!! The auction made an incredible £240.00. Thank you to everyone for their generosity.

Clarinet Surprise then followed. This was provided by Frank on both the Clarinet and then the Bass Clarinet. He played “When the Saints Come Marching In”, “Mud, Mud Glorious Mud”, “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, and “Stranger on the Shore”. He was also accompanied by his wife, Hazel on her Pink Ukele for “When I’m 65”. Thank you to you both for entertaining us and supporting our event.

Unfortunately, the next scheduled act didn’t appear – so we moved on to …

The Prize Draw, The first prize was £100, plus we had numerous prizes donated by local businesses. These included New Forest Parks Association (2 Group tickets for the New Forest Bus Tour), Hall and Woodhouse (£50 voucher), Jumbo House Chinese Takeaway (£20 voucher) Maddy Moos of West Totton (2 x £10 vouchers), Paulton’s Park (2 Adult Tickets), Pyramids Centre (Family Pass), Golden Acres Garden Centre (£10 voucher), Stewarts Garden Centre (£15 voucher), New Forest Wildlife Centre (1 Family of 4 and 2 Adult Vouchers). We also had donations from Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Bradbeers, as well as donations from a number of family and friends. Thank you to everyone, both those who donated and those who bought tickets. The draw made a substantial contribution towards the funds we raised.

The entry tickets had earlier been placed into a “Post Box”. The Lyndhurst Park Hotel had kindly donated a prize of An Overnight Stay for two, with Breakfast. Ticket Number 59 was the lucky winner. They will be able to stay at Lyndhurst Park Hotel at a date chosen by them anytime before the 23rd December 2014.

The final performance was given by the New Forest Rock Choir. Members had been arriving earlier in the afternoon and disappearing off into a room ajoining the room we were using, where they rehearsed right up until their performance. When it was their turn to take to the stage it was amazing to watch as around 30-40 of them as they just kept appearing from the side room. They filled the floor in front of the stage. Jenny their conductress, has amazing energy and enthusiasm as she encourages everyone with both actions as well as the songs. Their performance included “Proud”, “Something Inside so Strong”, “Someone Like You”, “Just the Way you Are” and their final song, “Dance with Me Tonight” included hand jive. Thank you to Jenny and all of her members for giving up their time to entertain us and support our cause.

Actually, THANK YOU to all of the entertainers – without you we wouldn’t have been able to put on this event. And thank you to everyone who bought tickets and came along.

We are pleased to say that our fundraising, after expenses have been paid totals just over £2,500.

At the Afternoon Tea, as well as receiving money from ticket sales, prize draw tickets and the art auction we also received £66.76 in the collection tins, a £51.80 donation from the Yoga Class of one of our supporters, and approximately £15 from sales of Myasthenia Gravis promotional items.

Amy will be presenting cheques to “The Myasthenia Gravis Association (Hampshire Branch)” and “Stanley Graveson Ward” in the very near future and we’ll let you all know when this happens.

February Update – Almost there

amyshope20

Wednesday 12th February
Well, just three days to go. Tickets for the Afternoon Tea are still selling, as are tickets for the prize draw. This week we received two more prizes for the draw courtesy of Maddy Moos in Totton, plus two more items for the Art Auction. Things are really gaining momentum.

The programme has changed slighty, as unfortunately one of the acts has had to pull out, so there will not be a Zumba display after all. Here is the programme as it stands now. As you will see – there is still plenty going on!!

Programme for Afternoon Tea (for performers) (2)

As well as an afternoon tea consisting of a selection of sandwiches, scones, cake and of course tea, the afternoon will be packed with entertainment, an art auction – which is growing in donations – and of course the prize draw. Not forgetting that every ticket bought for the afternoon tea will be entered into a draw for an overnight stay for two with breakfast at Lyndhurst Park Hotel. This prize has been donated by the Lyndhurst Park Hotel.

Publicity
Amy received some good publicity to raise awareness of Myasthenia Gravis when an interview she gave to the Southern Daily Echo was published centre page on Tuesday 28th January 2014. Amy was overwhelmed by the response she received from other publications wanting to hear about her story, so watch this space, I’m sure there will be more articles to follow.  http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/10967473.Why_I_can_t_smile___mum_of_two_tells_of_rare_condition/?ref=erec

Amy’s Book
Amy is still working on her book. It won’t be ready for the 15th February, but anyone who would like to know when the book is ready, can just give us their email address and we’ll notify them.

Donation – Sharon Lucas
Sharon took part in a pub quiz at the Saxon Inn, Calmore. Her team won and they kindly donated their winnings to Amy’s HOPE 20. Thank you to Sharon and her team for their generous donation of £144.

Children Welcome
We can’t believe that over the past few months with all the promoting of the Afternoon Tea that we’ve done we forgot to mention that children are welcome to attend. The cost for them will be £10 for 12 year olds and under. There will be no charge for children aged three and under.

Well, I’m sure there will be another update before the big day, but if you have any queries or would like to buy a ticket or two please contact Amy on ami.megan@talktalk.net or via facebook.

Art Auction – Donations to date

Pictures donated for Art Auction
Well, with just three days to go until the Main Event, we are still receiving donations for our Art Auction. We have been so lucky and overwhelmed by people’s generosity. Today we’ve been given a hand quilted cushion cover with insert, made and donated by Karen Collins, and Karen’s daughter, Sophie, has also donated a “Treasured Torso”. Pictures of these donations have been added to our other auction items.

Below are images of the donations we’ve received for the Art Auction. The auction will take place during the Afternoon Tea at Lyndhurst Park Hotel on Saturday 15th February 2014.  These are just to give you an idea of what will be on offer, although this doesn’t show the true quality of the pictures.  Donations have been received from Maggie Curtis, Water colours and photographs. Graham Neale, copies of his pencil drawings of animals, Wendy Roman, a cross stitch picture of “The Tailor of Gloucester” and Jen Harris, two pastels of Lepe Beach from different perspectives, three life drawings and a rams skull in charcoal. We have also had two hunting prints donated. The first is a genuine 1911 print entitled “Hounds throw up and spread out” and the second, not dated is entitled “The Joint-meet of the Quantock, Tiverton and Devon and Somerset Stag hounds at Crowcombe”. We hope that this eclectic mix has something for everyone.

And there’s even more. People are being very generous with their donations and today we have four more pictures to add to the Art Auction. These are all prints. The first is a purple flower – which I think is an allium. The second is a framed print of a picture entitled “The death of the Earl of warwick (King Henry VI), the third and fourth which should probably go as one lot are two prints of Edwardian scenes by Karl Kieffer.

January Update – Fundraising, Afternoon Tea, Art Auction

We hope that everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Now that the celebrations are over, with many of us being back at work and our everyday routines returning to normal the Amy’s HOPE 20 team can get back to the important task of fundraising.

Indoor Car Boot Sale – Lyndhurst Park Hotel
On Sunday we took the items that we’ve had donated to a brand new Indoor Car Boot Sale. This is a great idea, as many of our local car boot sales have closed for the winter. It is also ideal for those of us who, due to the wet weather we’ve had lately, have missed having a look around for that bargain that we just can’t live without, or need to sell, sell sell. It also means that we don’t have to get up early, look out of the window to check out the weather before loading up the car and heading off to sell our wares.

As this was the first Sunday that the hotel had hosted a car boot sale it was fairly quiet, but the organisers kindly said that traders could have a table free of charge for the first three weeks – so we will definitely be there again. Hopefully the word will spread as this venue has the makings of being a really good event.

It’s also perfect for us, being the venue of the Afternoon Tea which we will be holding on Saturday 15th February. I handed out a number of flyers and sold some of our draw tickets.

Indoor Car Boot Sale – Lyndhurst Park Hotel – Week 2 (Sunday 12th January 2014\)
We went to this event again today – and obviously people are getting to hear about it. There were more than twice as many traders as last week and a lot more people through the door. We will definitely be there again next week, so if you are looking for something to do next Sunday morning come along. The hotel have also provided a cafe so you can sit and have a cup of tea or coffee etc in comfort while browsing.

Donations
We have been really touched by people’s generosity. Amy’s PA, Sharon, was in a team that won a local pub quiz the other week and on her suggestion donated their prize money of £144 to Amy’s HOPE 20. On Monday I asked at a local shop if they would display a poster for us – and they offered us a voucher for the draw, and only today, three months after the Skydive I was handed a cheque from someone who said she would like to sponsor our cause. A huge thank you to all of you.

Publicity
We have received quite a bit of pubicity from a couple of different sources. We had an article published in the Waterside Herald at the end of December and an article in the Hampshire Branch Myasthenia Gravis Association Newsletter. This month we had a full page article in the Winter edition of the MGA Quarterly Newsletter, which can be seen on page 9 of the attached downloaded copy. 2013 Winter MGA News

Afternoon Tea
Plans for the Afternoon Tea are coming along nicely. We have got a number of people giving their time to entertain us, numerous prizes have been donated to our prize draw and now we’ve also received a number of items for the art auction. I’ve taken photographs of the auction items which you can see under the Art Auction post. All we need now is to sell more tickets. The venue can hold up to 220 people, so the more who attend, the more money we will be able to donate to the Myasthenia Gravis Association (Hampshire Branch) and Stanley Graveson Ward, Wessex Neurological Ward, Southampton General Hospital.

December update on Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20

Spreading the Word – Publicity
Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20 is getting the message out there. More people are hearing about Myasthenia Gravis and the affect it has on sufferers. We are very grateful to the Myasthenia Gravis Association for providing us with information leaflets and posters on MG to distribute and for the promotional items to sell on our stalls at car boot sales, indoor markets and now Christmas Fairs. Including the money raised from the Skydive in October, in total we have raised over £1,200.

We had a full A4 page article published in the Hampshire Branch Myasthenia Gravis Newsletter, which mentioned the skydive we did in October and the forthcoming event in February. There is also an editorial in our local free paper “The Waterside Herald”.

Fundraising –  Bartley Village Hall Christmas Fair – Sunday 8th December 2014
We had our usual table at the Bartley Christmas Fair, we have had a table at this fair for many years now, donating our takings to the Myasthenia Gravis Association. This year we were raising funds for Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20 and made £40.00 from our sales. We would also like to thank the committee of the Bartley Village Hall for donating the takings from their raffle to Amy’s H.O.P.E. 20. This added a further £94.00 to our fundraising.

Amy’s Book
Amy is continuing to write her book. She is hoping to have this available for purchase by 15th February. There is still a bit of work to do on it, plus we need to find someone who will publish it at a cost that is affordable.

Well, that’s all the news we have for you for now. As it’s only two weeks until Christmas we’d like to take this opportunity of wishing everyone a
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Since the Skydive – Update on our fundraising

SINCE THE SKYDIVE – UPDATE ON FUNDS RAISED

It’s now 4 weeks since we did our skydive, so I thought it was about time I updated everyone on how we’re doing. We have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity in sponsoring us. The sponsorship money is still coming in and to date we have raised £1,077.00.

We are still busy fundraising, selling items at car boot sales and indoor markets. We are also busy planning our main fundraising event which will take place in February. More details about this will be added soon.
